Minnesota Wedding Officiants

In Minnesota any licensed or ordained minister of the gospel in regular communion with a religious society may perform marriages.

— Ministers must file a copy of their credentials of ordination with the clerk of the district court of any county.

— Ministers must give a marriage certificate to the bride and groom and also file a certificate with the clerk of the district court in the county which issued the marriage license.

Marriage officiant credential filing

For a person (both Minnesota residents and non-residents) to be authorized to perform marriage ceremonies in Minnesota, the person must be at least 21 years old and must file their “officiant credentials” with a Minnesota county. Once this is done, marriages may be performed anywhere in the State of Minnesota.

517.04 Persons Authorized to Perform Marriages

Marriages may be solemnized throughout the state by an individual who has attained the
age of 21 years and is a judge of a court of record, a retired judge of a court of record, a court administrator, a retired court administrator with the approval of the chief judge of the judicial district, a former court commissioner who is employed by the court system or is acting pursuant to an order of the chief judge of the commissioner’s judicial district, the residential school administrators of the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf and the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind, a licensed or ordained minister of any religious denomination, or by any mode recognized in section 517.18.

517.05 Credentials of Minister

Ministers of any religious denomination, before they are authorized to solemnize a marriage, shall file a copy of their credentials of license or ordination or, if their religious denomination does not issue credentials, authority from the minister’s spiritual assembly, with the local registrar of a county in this state, who shall record the same and give a certificate of filing thereof. The place where the credentials are recorded shall be endorsed upon and recorded with each certificate of marriage granted by a minister.

Marriage License

  • The marriage license fee is $40.00 with Premarital Education completed. $115.00 without Premarital Education.

  • You may apply for a marriage license in any county in Minnesota regardless of residence or where the ceremony takes place, if you are going to be married within the geographical borders of Minnesota.

  • Both paries must be at least eighteen years of age.

  • Both parties applying for the marriage license must be present to complete the application.

  • No blood test is required.

  • Identification such as a driver’s license or state I.D.

  • Fee must be paid at the time you apply for the license.

  • There is no waiting period in Minnesota.

Marriage Application Requirement Arizona:

To complete the application for a marriage license, a couple must:

Both applicants should apply in person. However, if one of the parties cannot appear in person, a supplemental will be given to the party appearing before us to be completed by the non-appearing marriage applicant.

You must know the following information for both parties:

  • Full Names – before and after marriage

  • Addresses – before and after marriage

  • Age

  • Counties where each person lives

  • Date of Birth

  • Place of Birth

  • Provide social security numbers for each party. There is an additional form to complete for those individuals who do not have a social security number and can be obtained at the office.

  • If 1 or both of you has a felony conviction, please read Minnesota statute MS 259.13 for requirements.

  • Fee must be paid at the time you apply for the license.

  • Both parties applying for the marriage license must be present to complete the application.

  • It is important that you verify all information with your county Recorder/Treasure Office or License Service Centers before making a trip to purchase your marriage license.

    Marriage ID Requirement in Minnesota:

    Identification such as a valid driver’s license or state I.D.

    Marriage Residency Requirement:

    You do not have to be a resident of Minnesota.

    Marriage Waiting Period in Minnesota:

    There is no waiting period in Minnesota.

    If either or both applicants has/have been married previously, information regarding the termination of the most recent marriage is required, i.e., date, location, and if the previous marriage ended in divorce, the name of the court (i.e. 6th Judicial) where the marriage was terminated.

    Marriage License Fee Minnesota:

    The fee for a marriage license is $115.00, or $40.00 if you have completed 12 hours of premarital education.

    Premarital Education:

    To qualify for the reduced fee, you must present at the time of application an acceptable Statement of Premarital Education Form on the educator’s letter head (sample). It must be signed, dated, and notarized.

    Marriage Blood Test Minnesota:

    No. Minnesota does not require blood tests.

    Name Change:

    Getting a marriage license with your new name on it does not mean your name has automatically changed. If you need to change your last name, you can use an online marriage name change kit.

    Expiration Date of Marriage License:

    • Your marriage license is valid for 6 months, and may be used anywhere in Minnesota.

    • The official who performs the marriage ceremony should file the marriage license within 5 days of the ceremony (MS 517.10)

    A marriage must be witnessed by 2 adults (16 or older)
