How to Get Queens Marriage License

To get a Marriage License for a Queens, NY there are a few different options. You can always start your application online but to complete the application, you and your spouse must appear in person. To do this, you can go to the Queens City Clerk’s office and apply. It is located in the Borough Hall Building at 120-55 Queens Blvd, Ground Floor, Room G-100, Kew Gardens, NY 11424. They are open 8:30 am – 3:45 pm, Monday through Friday, except on court-approved holidays. If you have any questions, you can call the office at 718-286-2846.

 

Since Queens, NY is a municipality of New York State, you can also get a Marriage License at any other New York City Clerk’s office. These licenses are valid 24-hours after you receive them and are good for 60 days thereafter. If you are active duty military personnel, they are valid in New York State for 180 days. The cost of the license is $35 which you can pay on a credit or debit card or by money order.

 

Application Requirements

The number one application requirement for a Queens Marriage License or any New York state one is that both parties are at least 18 years of age. If one or both of the parties are seventeen, it is possible to receive a Marriage License but you will need written consent from a parent, and written approval of a supreme court justice or a family court judge.

 

If you are 18 years of age you will need valid, unexpired ID to prove it along with a host of other documents. These can be things like a driver’s license, non-driver photo ID, passport or military ID. When you present your ID you will also have to verify a whole host of other information about yourself such as, you and your future spouse’s name; current address; city, state, ZIP code and country; country of birth; date of birth; name and country of birth of your parents; Social Security number; and marital history.

 

When applying to get married, it is very important that if either spouse has been married before, they are no longer legally married. In order to have your application approved, All divorces, annulments, and dissolutions must be finalized before you apply for a new Marriage License. If you or your future spouse have been married before, you must list all prior marriages on your application. You must include your previous spouse’s full name; the date the divorce decree was granted; and the city, state, and country where the divorce was issued. You may be asked to produce a physical copy of the final divorce decree as well. If you are a widow, meaning your former spouse has passed away, you must produce your deceased spouse’s full name and date of death.

 

Name Change Options

One more thing to consider when getting married in Queens, NY or elsewhere is changing your last name. On the New York Marriage License application, there are a few name change options listed on the back. If you do want to make the last name change on your application, the name change takes legal effect at the conclusion of the Marriage Ceremony. Be very careful when doing this though because while you may correct mistakes on your Certificate of Marriage Registration, a mistake last name choice is not considered a mistake and cannot be changed through the New York amendment process.
