Marriage License in Adams County

Anyone wishing to marry in Pennsylvania must obtain a PA marriage license. Both applicants must appear together in person to complete the marriage license application. Applicants must have valid identification which may be a driver's license, military or Penn DOT photo ID. Birth certificates are required only when applicants have none of the above. All ID must be in english or accompanied by a certified english translation. Applicants must provide a social security number (federal and state mandates for U.S. citizens). If you lost your card, you must contact the Social Security office for written verification

Where to apply:

Applicants may apply in any county within Pennsylvania. Application does not need to be made in county of residence or where ceremony is to be performed. Contact the county where you plan to apply.

Applicants may apply only between 8:00a.m. and 4:00p.m., Monday through Friday except holidays. All applicants must be 18 years of age to obtain a marriage license without custodial parent's or legal guardian's consent. Applicants between 16 - 18 years of age must have a custodial parent present to consent to the marriage application. Consenting parent must have proper identification. Pennsylvania does not require premarital blood testing or physical examinations. Applicants under 16 years of age must have both written Court approval and written approval of the custodial parent.

When to apply:

Application must be made within 60 days of the wedding date. Marriage license are valid for 60 days from the date of issuance and may be used anywhere in PA. PA law requires a minimum 3 day waiting period after application is made before a license can be issued.

Who may not marry:

Persons related by blood as first cousins or closer may not marry in PA. Other prohibitions and policies are available in the Clerk of Courts office.

Remarriages:

Applicants who have previously married MUST HAVE:

Certified Copy of death certificate (if widowed). OR:
Original or Certified Copy of Divorce Decree dated more than 30 days prior to application date. If female applicant is divorced and has changed her name, she must have documentation of name. If applicant does not have the original Decree, she must obtain a CERTIFIED copy of the decree (with a court seal). Photocopies are NOT acceptable. Foreign divorce decree MUST HAVE a CERTIFIED ENGLISH TRANSLATION attached.
Civil annulments require same documentation as divorces.. (Church annulments are NOT accepted).

Fees:

Marriage license application is $ 60.00 payable by cash or check and includes a certified copy of the license. Please note there is a $ 26.50 return check fee if the bank returns the check for any reason. Certification will be automatically mailed within approximately 30 days of receipt of marriage license return. Marriage license fees and hours vary from county to county. Please call the county in which you intend on applying for more information.

Waiver of three (3) day waiting period is $ 5.00 (not included in $ 60.00).

Anyone wishing to marry outside Pennsylvania must contact that state, territory, country, etc. directly. Legal requirements of that jurisdiction apply.

Copy of Certificate of Marriage:

In Pennsylvania copies of marriage records were required to be filed starting in 1885. Copies of these marriages may be obtained from the courthouse in the county where the marriage license was issued. There are three types of marriage records available. The first is a plain copy of the marriage record which is typically for family genealogy records or personal use. The second (one-seal) and third type (triple-seal) are for official purposes and used by the persons named in the records. Order Copies of Records Online
