How Much a Marriage License Cost?

Maine law requires a couple to obtain a marriage license in order to have a legally binding wedding ceremony. Some states require a medical examination or blood tests in order to obtain a license. All require proof of identification and a marriage license application fee.

The cost for a marriage license application in Maine is $40.

The fee paid covers application processing only, it does not cover the cost of any certified copies of the marriage license.

Obtaining a Marriage License in Maine

Marriage licenses are issued at the town or city level. Both the bride and groom must visit the town office in person to apply for the marriage license. You may want to check your town's clerk for information.

Your marriage license is valid for 90 days and can only be used within the State of Maine. There is no longer a Waiting Period from the time your marriage license is issued until your wedding can take place. The person performing the ceremony is responsible for filing the marriage certificate with the town office that issued the marriage license.

Name Change:

Getting a marriage license with your new name on it does not mean your name has automatically changed. If you need to change your last name, you can use an online marriage name change kit.

The following individuals are authorized to perform marriages in Maine:

Maine does not have Justices of the Peace. Out-of-state Notaries and Justices of the Peace cannot officiate weddings in Maine. Maine does have an application for a non-resident officiant authorization to perform a marriage in Maine. Instructions and application are available on website.

The license can only be used within the State of Maine.
