How Much a Marriage License Cost?

Illinois law requires a couple to obtain a marriage license in order to have a legally binding wedding ceremony. Some states require a medical examination or blood tests in order to obtain a license. All require proof of identification and a license application fee.

Obtaining a Marriage License in Chicago

Applying For A Marriage License:

Before getting married in Chicago or suburban Cook County, couples must obtain a marriage license from the Cook County Clerk's office.

Eligibility

Under Illinois law, only eligible persons can marry. Both the bride and groom must:

Individuals who reside out of state may not apply for a marriage license in Illinois if such a marriage would not be legal in their home state.

Exceptions

Both parents or legal guardians must:

  1. appear in person
  2. provide sworn consent of the marriage at that time
  3. provide valid identification

If a court-appointed legal guardian is providing consent, a certified copy of the appointment is required.
